According to Mayo Clinic, "moles are a common type of growth on the skin. They often appear as small dark brown spots and are caused by clusters of pigmented cells. Moles generally appear during childhood and adolescence. Most people have 10 to 45 moles, almost all which appear before age 40. Some moles may fade as you age".
Moles may be present during birth and this has nothing to do with sun, it's just genetics. Studies show that sun exposure in childhood causes increase in number of moles. Irregular moles can change into melanoma.
The genes we inherit from our parents, and the amount of sun to which we are exposed are the major factors in determining mole numbers on skin.
Skin with more sun exposure tends to have more moles.
People who are living in sunny climates and donot practice sun avoidance are likely prone to moles.
Surprisingly, moles may lighten on it own or disappear completely later in life because of the body's immune system attacking it to regress.
HOW CAN MOLES BE TREATED?
Moles can be treated effectively by surgical removal. Fade creams and lightening creams don't work on moles.
HOW CAN YOU PREVENT MOLES?
Most moles are genetic and can not be prevented but there are some that are developed due to over exposure of sun. The following prevention methods could reduce the number of moles appearing on skin.
- Use sunscreen everyday of your life. The SPF should be 30 or higher.
- Wear protective clothing like shorts, long sleeves, long pants and wide-brimmed hats.
- Avoid being in the sun around 10am to 4pm.
