The first time I heard about pH balance was in my chemistry class way back in JSS. All this while I thought it was of no essence until I noticed several shower gels labeled "restores pH balance " and I was like here too? That was when I got really curious about this "pH" term.
Having an amazing skin has a lot to do with the pH balance of your skin.
pH is the abbreviated term for "Potential Hydrogen". This is the measure of acidity and alkalinity in a substance.
A Danish chemist ( Soren Order Lauritz) brought this term way back in 1909. The pH scale ranges from 0-14. With 0 being to acidic and 14 being too alkaline. The number 7 means neutral. Water has a pH scale of 7.
The preferred pH for the skin is 5.5 meaning it should be slightly acidic in order for the antibacterial properties to fight germs and bacteria.
When a skin is too acidic it becomes unbalanced and if it's too alkaline it becomes unbalanced. Having an unbalanced skin is a serious problem and I wouldn't wish that for anyone. Most skincare problems (like acnes, breakouts, fine lines and wrinkles) underlying cause is unbalanced pH.
An unbalanced skin is caused by many factors, for example air pollution, over exposing skin to sunlight. Our food intake and certain daily lifestyle can disturb the skin's pH balance.

Tips to balance the skin pH balance :
- Avoid applying soaps with harsh detergents in them. There are several bath cream labeled "restores pH balance". The skin derseves needs mild surfactants to retain moisture in it. Harsh soaps also strips the skin natural oil which isn't good.
- Since our skin pH should be slightly acidic, add foods like oranges, Apple to your diet.also balance with alkaline based foods like broccoli and dark green vegetables.
- Toners are known to balance the skin's pH so using toners should be part of your skincare routine. But say No! to toners with alcohol.
- Always wear your sunscreen to protect skin from harmful uv rays which disturbs the skin's pH balance.
- Now the ultimate is water. Drinking lots of water will balance the pH level.
