Hyperpigmentation Causes and Treatments

One problem that troubled me in my early years as a teenager was hyperpigmentation. I had such beautiful skin everywhere except my neck! What didn't I try? I remember using lemon juice, milk and all sorts of things but the dark patches was still there. As time went by the dark patches left as I followed a healthy skincare regimen.
In this article I'll explain what Hyperpigmentation is, the causes and treatments as well

WHAT IS HYPERPIGMENTATION?

Hyperpigmentation is the production of excess melanin causing dark spot on skin. Age spots or liver spots occur due to sun damage and are called by medical experts as Solar Lentigines.

Melasma is another form of hyperpigmentation and example are mask of pregnancy which occur during pregnancy. With mask of pregnancy the face gets darken and the skin on the abdomen darkens as well.

CAUSES OF HYPERPIGMENTATION

Sun exposure : Melanin absorbs the energy of the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays in order to protect the skin from over exposure and when this happens, the skin gets tanned which leads to hyperpigmentation. To solve this, a broad-spectrum sunscreen should be used.

Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes due to puberty, adolescent stage and pregnancy can cause hyperpigmentation.

Acne: Break outs or acne may leave dark spots after treatment. These dark spots forms hyperpigments

Hereditary: Freckles is hereditary

HYPERPIGMENTATION TREATMENT

Creams with hydroquinone or other bleaching agents like kojic acids are used to lighten and fade hyperpigmentation by slowing the production of melanin so that the dark spots fade gradually to match normal skin color.

In more severe case creams with Tretinoin and cortisone creams may be used.

Chemical peels and laser treatment are very effective ways of getting rid of hyperpigmentation. You have to seek a medical expert when it comes to laser treatment or the results will be terrible.

Hyperpigmentation could be reduced if a broad-spectrum sunscreen is used everyday. So never forget to use your sunscreen.
